Measuring Trees

We had another fun day today.   This year really seems to be going well - I am thankful!   We spent about an hour walking around our place and Mom and Dad’s place measuring trees (to determine age), doing leaf and bark rubbings, identifications and sketching.   Before we headed out we had a brief lesson on trees using (Missy’s) Christian Kids Explore Biology.   The boys enjoyed taking their time and investigating some stumps from trees that Grandpa recently had to cut down.   Also, we discovered that many more trees than we thought had been damaged in the storm in early August.   Many are split or have huge limbs hanging down.   They just aren’t in the areas we go very often, so we hadn’t noticed them before.

Jackson is quite knowledgeable about trees and it was a joy to have him teach me!   And Jonathan had great powers of deduction, making observations and drawing conclusions that were right on target.   Of course, now I can’t remember exactly what they were.... I am exhausted and can barely think.   But I do remember that he did it - several times today!   Does that count?   :)   Basically, our days just keep reinforcing the fact that the choices and changes we have made this year are good ones.   Our days are not ALL “sweetness and light” - but they ARE truly fulfilling and enjoyable.   And we are ALL learning a lot - together.

Looks like great fun! We did this for our first week of school, definitely something Trevor has remembered. He's mentioned doing it to really big trees that we see--of course no where near home, and when we don't have a measuring tape!
