Brazil Lapbook

I think this was Jackson’s favorite lapbook that he did. Of course, it was his third lapbook - so by then we were really rolling with the “how to do it” part. :) But he found the rain forest really interesting - plus, this was the unit where we read the book Nate Saint: On aWing and a Prayer. That book left a huge impression on him (and on me!). He was SOOOOOO excited when we were looking through our collection of old National Geographic magazines and found a few pictures of the unique drop technique invented by Nate Saint for delivering supplies to jungle areas via plane. He used those pictures in this lapbook and created a special section just on Nate Saint.

As you can see from all the lapbook pictures, we like to create our own thing. Jackson (and now Jonathan in the Ancient Greece lapbooks) likes to incorporate his favorite things he learned from whatever unit we have completed and then determine some creative way to put it in lapbook form. We use 2 books to help us with deciding which folds and mini books might work best for each bit of information. They are Dinah Zike’s Big Book of Books and Tammy Duby’s Ultimate Lapbook Handbook. I also highly recommend Tammy Duby’sDVD of Tammy Teaches Lapbooks for more great ideas on a variety of lapbooks. Lapbooks are such a great review of material and they make wonderful keepsakes and/or portfolios.

Here are Jackson’s Brazil lapbook pictures.
Front Cover

Lapbook opened up - see section in red on Nate Saint.

This is the red section on Nate Saint opened up. These are the pictures he found in an old National Geographic - that is actually Nate Saint and his yellow plane on the beach in those photos! And see the picture of the person reaching up for the package? In the picture you can just make out the plane flying in circles above - allowing the person on the ground to stand still and take the package off the hook. Plus, Jackson included a paper model of Nate Saints plane.

Under the flap with the Nate Saint stuff.... we have rainforest info, map of Brazil, and a mini folder containing fact cards on Brazil, “what comes from the rainforest”, etc. plus a paper model of the Blue Morpho butterfly found in the rain forest. (The model actually flaps its wings!)

Flap book on Layers of the Rain Forest..... closed and opened.

Right side of lapbook opened up showing currency in little envelope, mini book of pictures of Brazil and matchbooks with rainforest animal riddles. One piece of advice - don’t google “pictures of Brazil” with your little one sitting next to you - unless you have very quick reflexes and can cover the screen with one hand and hit your Back Button with the other!  You get much different pictures of that request than you do of “pictures of Canada”. :) We then chose to photocopy pictures out of books for this!
