Bugs and Baking

No, not together! :) This day just seems to have been full of nature study and time spent in the kitchen.

This morning when we woke up we noticed our buddy the praying mantis was back on the window - but this time he brought a friend with him! Looks like we are a haven for praying mantids.

Then, remember the first day of school when Jonathan said he wanted to learn about snakes? In case he ran across any? Wouldn’t you know.... Marvin ran up a snake while on the mower! He came in and said “one thing I have never seen on this place the last 10 years is a snake, until today!” It was right by the back patio! Yikes! Guess Jonathan was on to something.

Finally, this evening Missy and her kids came by. (No, they weren’t the subject of our nature study!) :) As they were leaving we turned on the front porch light and “voila” there were 2 perfect spiders and webs ready to jump at the chance for a feast. With the light on, the moths and bugs started flying around and many got caught in the webs. We watched as each spider caught and spun its prey in webbing. One spider actually had 2 at the same time and it was almost comical watching it “decide” which one to tend to first!
Gotta love that up close and personal nature study!

Today was also baking day and I had a lot of orders. I made Multi Grain, Herb, Spelt/Potato, Whole Wheat and Banana Oatmeal muffins. When I was done, Jonathan BEGGED me for a cake. He has been asking for this ever since we got back from the fair, so I finally said “yes”. Now, this is the first cake we have made since I made my commitment to lose weight. I didn’t lick the beater, I didn’t eat the hunk that stuck to the pan when we turned the cake out on the rack, I didn’t eat the left over icing. Can you believe it? I was quite proud of myself! Hopefully the boys will eat it all soon so I don’t have to look at it for long! Carrot sticks just don’t do that “thang” for me like chocolate cake does!

Wow! You made all that bread in one day. . . that is awesome! Also, great job at sticking to your diet. I know how hard it is to pass up anything sweet!
