School update

It has also been awhile since I posted anything school related.  Having my old blog go down put a real damper on things!  So, what have we been up to since I last posted on the old blog?  A lot!

We enjoyed reading about Charlemagne in Week 4 of TOG, especially the book Son of Charlemagne by Barbara Willard.  The boys designed their own coat of arms and made shields and swords.  (always fun)  We read about falconry and were reminded of the falcon we met at the state fair.  We used our collection of Usborne books to study the Vikings and the boys found them especially fascinating.  We have loved reading Robin Hood and of course that has led to much play acting around here.  :)  We have traced the paths of the various Crusades and the boys are completing their "Four All's" projects for their first ever Unit Celebration coming up in a couple weeks.  This week we are discovering Marco Polo :) and finishing up some reading that we got behind on last week.  We have also been enjoying the book Famous Men of the Middle Ages.  That has been a favorite read aloud throughout this unit.

ha!  :)

Jackson is always up for a good photo op... ;)

But one of our favorite things we have done this first unit was way back in Week 2, but I never got around to blogging it.  We took photos of the stained glass windows at our church and got to learn more about their meanings.  I was struck by how many years we have attended our church and enjoyed the beauty of the stained glass windows without me fully knowing the stories behind them.  One little gem I dug out of my file cabinet was a booklet that was created by a former assistant pastor which gave the history of the Rose Window and the meaning of each panel.  I am SO glad that I never throw anything away!  :)  I must have picked this up at church back in circa 1996!  Can you believe I even had two of them??  Always thinking ahead, I guess.  :)

The Rose Window panels recall the stories from the old Testament from creation to the prophets.  In the center is a sun with a cross, symbolizing the risen Christ.  The individual panels, from "12 o'clock" on clockwise are The Genesis Window, The Fall Window, The Moses Window, The Passover Window, Ten Commandments Window, The Ark Window, The David Window, The Solomon Window, The Isaiah Window, The Jeremiah Window, The Ezekiel Window, and The Daniel Window.

Here are pictures of more stained glass in our sanctuary.

Hah, don't you love when you can tie in different things in your LIFE to what you're learning in school?! Very cool!
